Biarritz Side Table

A drinks table has one job and a narrow tolerance for doing it. Too low and you reach down past the arm of the chair; too wide and it will not stand between a chair and a sofa, which is the only place it is ever needed. Biarritz is twenty-four inches to the top and thirteen across — a glass lands an inch or two below the arm of most lounge chairs, and the footprint is smaller than the top, so it tucks closer than its diameter suggests.

The top is solid brass, hand-spun and then turned on a lathe to cut the stepped bezel at its edge. That step is the whole detail: it catches a line of light around the full circumference and gives the disc an apparent thinness it does not actually have. It is brushed rather than polished and lacquered, so it holds its tone instead of needing to be kept up.

The column is turned from a hardwood core to a waisted profile — wider at the foot, drawn in at the neck, flaring slightly where it meets the underside of the top. Nothing about that shape is cylindrical, which is what makes the wrapping difficult: the covering is cut into panels by hand and worked around a compound curve, seamed on the centre line front and back so the joins fall where the eye expects a shadow.

A solid brass ring sits at the foot, mitered to the column so the two meet without a visible gap, and repeats the top's band at the bottom of the piece. Felt pads underneath protect hard floors.

Wipe the top with a dry, soft cloth — never a metal polish, which will strip the lacquer and leave the brass to tarnish unevenly. Dust the column with a dry cloth only and blot spills immediately rather than rubbing. Use a coaster under anything cold or wet, and keep the table out of direct sun.
