Menton Side Table

A metal top changes what the table is for. Stone has to be thick enough not to crack, so a stone top is always a slab; bronze at three quarters of an inch holds a full glass of water without flexing, and the edge can be machined to a line no stone would survive.

The dome is the difficult cut. A cylinder is turned; a dome is turned and then worked back by hand, and the shoulder has to meet the brass collar in a continuous curve with no flat where the two touch.

Carrara is the quietest of the white marbles — grey veining, feathered rather than dramatic, on a cool ground. It was chosen to sit under the bronze without competing with it.
