DETAILS

Travertine is a stone with holes in it. Cut and left unfilled, the surface keeps the open pores the material formed with, so the top reads as texture rather than polish and no two are alike.

The brass stem is the reason the piece works. A stone pedestal this narrow would have to be thick to stand up; carrying the load on metal instead lets the top sit at an inch and a quarter, and puts a bright line between two heavy masses.

The base is turned rather than assembled — one piece of stone, cut to a cone, so the grain runs continuously around it and there is no seam to find.
