Lipari Side Table

Two swelling forms stacked one on the other, turned as a single profile so the curve never breaks. It is the shape of a gourd, or of pottery thrown in three movements, and at this scale it works as much as sculpture as furniture.

The grain is cerused — the open pores filled pale so the figure of the timber reads as line rather than colour. On a turned form that means the grain wraps horizontally around each bulb and runs vertically up the waist, which is why the surface changes character as you walk past it.

Teak is the reason it can go outside. It carries its own oil, resists water and insects without treatment, and is the timber used on boat decks for exactly that reason.

Left outdoors and uncovered, the cerused finish will soften and the timber will move toward silver-grey. Kept covered or indoors, it holds its pale tone. Both are correct; it depends which you prefer.

Indoors, dust with a soft dry cloth. Outdoors, rinse and wipe dry, and cover or bring in over winter. Teak will silver in sun and rain — that patina is natural and does not affect the wood. Do not pressure-wash or use bleach.
