Serifos Swivel Chair

A chair with nothing on it has nowhere to hide. Serifos carries no frame, no exposed joinery and no applied trim, so every line is the upholstery itself — which means the shape underneath has to be right before a yard of cloth is cut.

The back is built over a laminated, shaped shell rather than a bent frame with padding filled in behind it. The curve is the structure. It runs from a high point behind the shoulder and falls in one continuous sweep to the arm, the same profile on both sides, so the chair reads correctly from any angle as it turns.

Along the top edge, a single welt is set into the seam where the outside and inside back meet. It is the only line on the chair, and it is there to hold the edge crisp as the piece ages — an unwelted edge on a curve this tight will soften and go wavy within a few seasons.

The seat is one deep cushion on a webbed platform, a high-resilience core wrapped in a down-and-fiber blend. It sits low and long, so the chair takes a relaxed posture rather than an upright one.

Underneath is a solid walnut plinth turned to a true circle and finished with a low-sheen oil. A sealed ball-bearing swivel is set into it, rated for full rotation under load and quiet from the first turn. Felt pads on the underside protect hard floors. Upholstery is cut and fitted by hand to each shell, with the seam placement set out so the pattern runs unbroken around the curve.

Vacuum the upholstery on a low setting and rotate the seat cushion every few weeks so it wears evenly. Dust the plinth with a dry, soft cloth. Keep the chair out of direct sun, which will lighten walnut and fade upholstery over time.
