DETAILS

The line is the whole chair. From the back corner, the arm falls in one continuous slope to the front — no break, no scroll, no seam interrupting it. That curve is cut into the frame itself rather than padded on top, so it holds its shape for the life of the chair instead of softening into a shoulder after a few years.

Underneath is a kiln-dried hardwood frame, corner-blocked and doweled at every joint, with the seat rails glued and screwed as well as pinned. Eight-way hand-tied springs carry the seat. It is slower to build than a sinuous-spring seat and it is the reason the chair sits level across its full width rather than dipping where people favor.

The plinth is solid walnut, mitered at the corners and shaped to a soft taper at each foot. It carries the upholstery clear of the floor by a couple of inches, which keeps a heavy chair from looking planted — and makes it read lighter in a room than its depth suggests.

Seat and back are single cushions, each a high-resilience core wrapped in a down-and-fiber blend, so they take an impression and recover overnight rather than staying flat. The back cushion is loose and reversible; rotate it with the seat and both wear evenly.

Upholstery is cut and fitted by hand to each frame. Where the cloth has a direction, the pattern is matched across the seat, the inside back and the arm faces, and railroaded on the outside back so the run is unbroken. Piping is cut from the same cloth on the bias. Leveling glides are fitted under the plinth.

CARE

Vacuum the upholstery on a low setting and rotate both cushions every few weeks so they wear evenly. Dust the plinth with a dry, soft cloth. Keep the chair out of direct sun, which will lighten walnut and fade upholstery over time.
