Lucca Dome Coffee Table

The top is not a solid block. A five-foot disc cut two and a half inches thick would weigh close to seven hundred pounds in stone alone and would need a crate rated for it and a crew to match. Instead the slab is cut at an inch and a quarter and the edge is mitered and bonded back on itself, so the rim reads two and a half inches deep while the table stays at a weight two people can place at three and four feet. The miter is the piece of work that matters: the joint runs the full circumference and has to close invisibly on a curve.

Blot spills at once, especially wine, citrus and anything oily — marble is porous and will etch where an acid sits on it. Use coasters. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner only; never vinegar, lemon or a general-purpose spray. Wipe the brass band with a dry cloth, never a metal polish. Dust the base with a dry cloth, following the grain.
