Lecce Coffee Table

The base is built the way a classical column is fluted, turned inside out: instead of grooves cut into a drum, rounded ribs stand proud of it. Between each pair is a shallow panel of white oak, its grain running vertically so the rhythm of rib and panel carries all the way around.

Each panel curves very slightly inward. The effect is easiest to see at the floor, where the bottom edge of the drum turns from a circle into a soft scallop between the ribs.

Beneath it, a recessed plinth sits well inside the drum, so the base never seems to touch the floor and the table reads lighter than its weight.

The top is a single round of marble with a softly eased edge, wide enough to overhang the drum on every side. Veining varies from block to block; the piece shown is representative, and yours will differ.

Blot spills on the marble at once; acidic liquids such as wine, citrus and coffee will mark it. Use coasters and a tray under anything wet, and avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners. Dust the oak base with a dry cloth.
