Riviera Curved Sofa

The curve is the reason for the piece. Pulling both ends inward turns the sofa toward the room rather than the wall behind it, which is what lets it sit away from an edge without looking stranded.

The panels are the difficult part. Each is woven flat by hand, then worked into the bend of the frame so the weave follows the curve without breaking pattern at the joint. Where a solid arm would stop light, this one passes it through, and the silhouette reads as a line rather than a block.

Oak is selected for grain, so color and figure vary from frame to frame and the same finish reads differently across them. Cane tightens in dry air and relaxes in humidity; a little seasonal movement is normal and does not affect the structure. Beneath it all, a slender steel plinth carries the volume just clear of the floor.

Upholstery, solid oak, woven cane and powder-coated steel.
