DETAILS

The crest rail runs in one continuous curve from arm to arm, and the panels below it are woven rather than solid, so the chair holds its shape without closing in around the sitter. The seat is deep and round; the back cushion is loose, which lets the seat keep its shape while the back gives.

A fixed chair has to be dragged to face a fire, a window, or a conversation. This one turns instead, which is why it works as well in the middle of a room as in the corner of one, and why the arms sit at the height an elbow actually lands.

Oak is selected for grain, so color and figure vary from frame to frame. Each cane panel is woven by hand, which means small differences in tension and spacing between one side and the other.
