Hydra Swivel Chair

The band is the whole idea. One length of laminated timber is bent to follow the arms and the back in a single unbroken sweep, and the upholstery is built to sit inside it rather than over it — so the frame reads as a line drawn around the chair rather than as structure holding it up.

Inside that line, the seat is deep and the back is low, which is the proportion that makes a tub chair comfortable rather than merely round. The cushion is loose and reversible; everything else is tight-upholstered, so the silhouette holds its shape.

It swivels a full turn and returns to centre when you get up. In a seating group that matters more than it sounds: one chair that turns lets a room work in two directions without being rearranged.

Vacuum the upholstery with a brush attachment and rotate the seat cushion regularly so it wears evenly. Blot spills at once and do not rub. Dust the exposed timber with a soft dry cloth and keep it out of direct sun, which will lighten it unevenly against the upholstery.
