Ravello Serpentine Sofa

The seat is an uninterrupted bench, upholstered tight, so the whole piece reads as a carved form rather than an assembly of parts. Back height rises from 26" at the low point of the sweep to 31" at the high — the figure changes along the length because the form does.

Tight upholstery leaves nowhere for a flaw to hide. There are no loose cushions to sit over an imperfect seam, so the back is molded first and the upholstery stretched over it by hand, with no seam allowed to fall where the eye follows the curve.

Small turned legs hold the volume a little clear of the floor, deliberately under-scaled so the mass appears to float rather than stand. Each is turned individually, so grain and tone vary.
