Solid oak frame on a continuous plinth base

DETAILS

Vertical slats run the full width of the back, with straps woven between them by hand. The weaving is done into the completed frame rather than as a separate panel, so tension differs a little from one bay to the next.

Most sofas have a back that has to face a wall. This one does not: the structure is the screen, so the piece reads from behind as well as in front and can stand in the middle of a room without a finished panel to hide.

The straps are left unlined. They darken where hands fall, lighten where light reaches, and soften rather than stiffen with use. Oak is selected for grain, so color and figure vary from frame to frame.
