Camogli Bench

Where most benches hide their frame beneath the seat, Camogli puts it on the outside. Each end is a full, soft roll of upholstery, and against its outer face stands a single flat piece of solid walnut that runs straight down and turns at the floor into a sled foot.

The walnut is cut with a rounded top edge, so it sits into the curve of the roll rather than against it. The upholstery appears to lean on the wood, and the wood appears to hold it in place.

A low walnut rail runs the length of the bench on each side, carrying a tight seat with a crisp seam along its top edge. Every line in the frame is straight; every line in the upholstery is round. The piece is built on that contrast.

It works at the foot of a bed, along a hall, or opposite a sofa, where its ends read as two low arms.

Vacuum the upholstery on a low setting with a soft brush, paying attention to the tops of the rolled ends, which take the most handling. Dust the walnut with a dry cloth, and keep the bench out of direct sun, which lightens walnut and fades upholstery over time.
